The 29th Olympiad started on 8/8/08 at 8:00 PM. In continuing with that theme, Michael Phelps swam himself into history with his 8th gold medal in a single Olympic games.

Incredible.

Unbelievable.

Awe-inspiring.

Phenomenal.

It takes a lot of ways to make eight, and for this reason, many were unable to believe that Phelps could actually do this. It's not that he doesn't have the ability, the build, the speed, the mental strength. It's that to win a gold medal, let alone eight, requires complete perfection. There is so much luck involved in winning eight times. There is so much teamwork required. There is so much heart required, so much work required, so much brain strength required and for now, Phelps is the only athlete in the world to have all of this working in sync at the same time.

During the past few weeks, I've wanted to learn everything I could about Phelps, and what I've learned is this:

Michael Phelps is very different than most popular athletes in that his sport is only viewed by wide audiences in his home country every four years. When he watched the 1996 Olympics, Phelps saw basketball, track, and baseball but was most inspired by swimmers Tom Malchow and Tom Dolan. He spent countless hours in the pool, and these hours ended up making him an international champion.

In an interview with Matt Lauer, Phelps said he and his coach decided that he would swim every day of the 40 weeks between Worlds and the Olympics. He swam through Christmas, birthdays, and family events. He swam when he was angry and when he was jubilant, when he was tired and when he was fully fueled. He ate and ate and ate not to enjoy his meals but to fuel his body for workouts that burned upwards of 4,000 calories. Most Americans consume (or are recommended to consume) between 1200 and 2500 calories a day.

When most kids tired of pursuing their 11-year old dreams, Phelps pushed himself even harder to achieve his and became an Olympic swimmer by age 15. He left his family to follow his coach, moving from Baltimore to Ann Arbor where he lived on the University of Michigan campus, but passed on the education (for now) to make himself a better swimmer. He wrote down goals with his coach that became so specific that he had exact times he wanted to reach in different events. In order to prove that all he would accomplish was done by practice alone, Phelps volunteered for a United States Anti-Doping Agency program in which he would and still completes extra steroid testing. Cleanly.

During all of this, he attempted to live a normal life. He learned how to live on his own for the first time, was charged with a DUI once, got a dog who became his best buddy, lost to friends in video games, and cheered in awe for athletes like LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Paul Pierce and Tiger Woods. One of the coolest parts of the Olympics for him was actually getting a chance to meet these athletes, wordless like a camera-carrying fan from Nowheresville, USA.

There's only so much normal a 6'4" man with a 6'7" wingspan, size 14 feet and dinner-plate size hands can have, however. With physical assets and trained prowess in his sport, Phelps does not solely wish to win 8 gold medals; what he really wants to do is attract fans to swimming, to show people why he loves getting in that pool or cheering on his teammates as the push through clear, aqua water or watching with his heart pumping faster than he can swim as more world records are broken. He wants to revolutionize swimming in the way that Tiger Woods did with golf, in the way that the home run race brought back baseball and Jordan became the emblem of NBA dominance.

And for this new fan, he has.

then the Sox aren't going back to back.

I can't count the amount of times that I've said this season to assorted family/friends/strangers that the Sox bullpen sucks. Now, there's a new problem fast developing. Clay Buchholz is at the lowest he has ever been in his barely 1-year of Major League pitching. Since coming off the DL and a promising trip to Pawtucket, Buchholz has gone 0-5 in six starts. He lasted a little over 3 innings today, but could easily have been taken out in the third inning when he gave up two 2-run home runs.

A couple weeks ago, heck a couple days ago, this would not have been such a big problem. Just bring Masterson back to the rotation for a few starts and bam! Problem solved. However, Tim Wakefield went on the DL today and Masterson is one of the closest things the Sox have to reliable in their bullpen besides Pap. The Sox do have Bartolo "I-eat-hamburgers-by-the-ton" Colon in Pawtucket, but he's rehabbing right now and pitched only 3 innings in his last start. With one spot in the rotation that needs to be filled for at least two starts and no help for the bullpen arriving at the trading deadline, the Red Sox can't afford to figure out a solution to Buchholz's issues.

There is some talk of bringing knuckleballer Charlie Zink up, but his pitching coaches have reported that he still lacks confidence in his knuckleball, a hole that could be catastrophic in the big leagues.

It seems quite hopeless, but I came up with an excuse to cover these issues. It's as simple as calling these troubles "Manny being Manny."

That's right. If Manny hadn't refused to play until the Red Sox traded him, the team could have used their time and prospects more wisely at the trade deadline. Instead of selling their souls to get rid of the slugger, the Sox might have been able to pick up on some pitching, whatever pitching, they could find. Then, when these "freak" accidents happen with the pitching staff, they would have had a better selection of patches to choose from. Damn Manny.

In other news, both of my parents now have iPod touches. I only have a lowly, regular iPod. At the risk of sounding selfish and spoiled, what 18-year old has worse technology than her over-the-hill parents?!
So I have been glued to my computer and ESPN/NESN all day long and just now am hearing and pretty certain that Manny Ramirez has been traded to the LA Dodgers for Jason Bay and others.

Please allow a moment of tears.

Now that I am trying to get over my emotional attachment to Manny Ramirez, it's time to analyze.

Do I think the Red Sox have gotten a better player? No. It's pretty hard to match Manny's ability on the field. What I do think is the Sox have gotten a player who can help the team more than Manny can. I can't imagine what it must feel like as a teammate to deal with someone saying, "the Red Sox don't deserve me," or "I can't play today" constantly for a month. Yeah, he can't be replaced at the plate, but at the same time all the intangibles he brings to the game are less than desirable. At times, I've felt that Manny has been able to leave his issues off the field, however, at other times I think he has affected the team negatively (re: August/September 2006, the past few weeks)

Now it is coming through via Nick Cafardo that Hansen, Moss go to Pittsburgh along with Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris and the Dodgers would get Ramirez while the Sox get Jason Bay.

This seems like a lot to me, and although Hansen hasn't been great, Moss has been fantastic. To trade three players to two teams and only get one in return? I wouldn't do it, but Theo has made some gutsy moves in the past. I would hope that the Sox are at least getting a pitching prospect . . . is there anyone else that thinks the Sox bullpen sucks as is right now?

Now reports are coming through that the Sox are also paying $7 million to also get rid of Manny. As much as Jason Bay will be great and I'm glad that Jason Bay won't go to the Rays, the Sox basically are taking him like leftover laundry in order to get rid of Ramirez.

NESN is already showing graphics of Manny in Dodger blue and Bay in a Sox hat. I've done some research on Jason Bay and he seems pretty good . . . 140 home runs, 454 RBIs, had an off year last year but seems to be rebounding this year. We'll see come Friday I guess.

Welcome to the Bay State, Jason Bay!
I've always thought that as a blogger, I should write from an authoritative perspective, as if I know what is going on and am providing answers to the reader. However, when it comes to Manny, I, like the rest of the Nation, am utterly baffled.

I've tried sorting this whole situation out in my head via timeline.
Wednesday against the Mariners: Manny told Francona he couldn't play because of a sore right knee.
Friday: Manny was penciled into the lineup and then told Mills he was again unavailable.
Friday night: the Sox called Manny's bluff and MRIed not only his sore right knee, but his left as well. The MRIs were clear.
Saturday: the Sox reportedly told Manny that if he did not play, he would be suspended/fined/disciplined accordingly.
Saturday afternoon: Tito reveals that he has had conversations with Manny about recent events and every so often, the club runs into these bumps in the road but everyone eventually moves on and twice it has ended in World Series rings.
Saturday FOX coverage: Theo Epstein told Ken Rosenthal that if Manny would waive his no-trade clause, the Red Sox would be very interested in trading Manny.
Sunday, ESPNdeportes: Manny says he is open to being traded if it benefits both sides, that if the Red Sox don't trade him they should just send him a note at the end of the season saying goodbye, and in '09 he's moving on.

All I have been able to glean from this insanity is that Manny is still pretty upset about the contract issue, the Sox aren't willing to budge in the matter and don't see eye-to-eye with Manny about negotiations, Manny most likely took some time off to make a statement to the front office that he is unhappy, Tito talked to Manny and calmed him down, then Theo made some comments about Manny to FOX, Manny reignited and fired back on Sunday through a forum in which he felt most comfortable, Spanish-language media.

What I'm still missing is how Manny thinks that taking time off and causing a ruckus would make ANY team want him. The Sox have already put him on waivers once, and with no takers despite Manny's indisputable numbers, it is clear Manny's behavioral issues are outweighing the benefit of his bat for many GMs and owners.

What is also unclear to me, (and I may just be stupid or missing something here) is that this isn't the first, second, third or even fourth time that Manny has acted out. He's made some zany catches, had some serious trade demands and whining problems, gone on strike against the media and taken personal time off for no reason before. He never reports to Spring Training on time. I don't see the difference between Manny taking time off this season and Manny quitting early in 2006, but the Sox officials seem to be pretty upset this time around. Who knows what happened behind the scene - tics finally wearing on people, perhaps struggling negotiations, but there must be something in the shadows of all this that we don't and may never know about that is really making the ownership, front office, and managerial staff of this team nuts. If Manny's strange tendencies bother them this much, then why has no clash happened since Manny was placed on waivers?

Above all, is it really worth it to get rid of Manny? This may sound like a stupid question, but Manny's off-field troubles have NEVER found their way between the lines with the exception of his days off. Amidst all the trouble stirring in the newspapers and offices of 4 Yawkey Way, Manny went 3 for 5 in a crucial game against the Yankees on Sunday and knocked in two runs tonight to take the lead against the Angels. Yes, his behavior leaves much to be desired, but his bat almost erases all the negativity that his attitude and antics bring. Without Manny, the 3, 4 punch of Ramirez and Ortiz that was so critical in both World Series wins would be gone, and a bat like Manny's would be hard to find without having to give up some serious prospects.

At the end of the blog, there is always an obligatory pull to leave some kind of conclusion and answer all questions, but on this issue, I really don't know what the right, conclusive answer is . . . if there even is one.

The 79th All-Star Game was that of legend, both literally and figuratively. If that game can't showcase the best baseball has to offer, I don't know what can. The pitching was awe-inspiring, the offense was fighting, the defense was Ugglay at times and amazing at others, the stadium was gorgeous, and the ceremonies were spectacular.

Then there were the people; the media who made up a story in order to widen their audience, the citizens who displayed the worst New York has to offer, and the fans who succumbed to a version of mob-mentality that made them seem idiotic.

People claim that what happened to Jonathan Papelbon these last two days should be expected, that as part of a rivalry, a player often finds himself threatened by people who look to tabloids instead of facts for information and should simply let all of it roll off his shoulders. On a small scale, the aforementioned may be passably acceptable, however, when a pregnant woman is taunted and threatened, a point is reached where those threats are simply immature and disgraceful.

Papelbon never said that he should close instead of Rivera. What he did say, as reported by Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News (the paper that dubbed Papelbon "Papelbum"0 was, "If I was managing the team, I would close. I'm not managing the team, so it don't matter. We've both (Rivera and himself) earned that right; us, by winning the World Series and having the opportunity of having our manager there and our team being represented, and Mariano by what he's done for this role, we're in Yankee Stadium and blah, blah, blah. It's not that easy. Everybody thinks it's a cut and dry answer, but it's not."

Papelbon later reinforced his comments by telling The Boston Globe that it is in his competitive nature to want to close the game. Add to the equation that Papelbon wasn't the only one who expressed his desire to close and you get some irresponsible journalism. Francisco Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Angels also said that he would like to close, calling on the masses to judge by the numbers. Rodriguez leads the major leagues with 35 saves in contrast to Rivera's 23 and Papelbon's 28. The New York media, however, in the nature of rivalry, drew no attention to Rodriguez's comments, which were enclosed by parenthesis as a type of side-note to the article, but rather targeted Papelbon.

Instead of an apology, the New York Daily News continued to fall short of the bar when columnist John Harper labeled Papelbon, "just cocky enough to be a true villain" and claimed that the All-Star Game was "something of a tribute to Rivera, the best closer ever," and wrote that Papelbon should have just simply conceded to Rivera. I must have missed the memo that the All-Star Game was all about Rivera instead of Yankee Stadium, and the whole purpose of the event was to show for a half of an inning what majesty is embodied by: the legendary Mariano "Mo" Rivera.

If somehow the world of which John Harper speaks actually exists, then I suppose it was permissible of Yankee fans to threaten a pregnant woman who did nothing more than marry Jonathan Papelbon. Heck, I know I spend most of my free time watching pregnant women and yelling obscenities at them during a time in which they celebrate the achievements of their spouses.

The behavior of New Yorkers during festivities caused Papelbon to claim, "I wish I hadn't taken [my wife]." Mission accomplished New York, although I am not sure what good New Yorkers accomplished by their display.

During a time when the nation's most passionate baseball fans were celebrating the end of an era in baseball while watching the best players at their best, the New York fans and media were quite simply at their worst. Their behavior these past few days has been nothing short of a disgrace to a great city and a great franchise, and will forever mar the otherwise perfect tribute to the greatest sport there ever was.

The Red Sox started to see this feature last year, and they're really seeing it this year. The farn system is making a huge impact for the Red Sox at the Major League level.

Justin Masterson was the latest example for the Red Sox last night as he pitched his way to a one-run, three hit victory. Kevin Youkilis had a few golden glove worthy plays last night, Dustin Pedroia served as a human vacuum at second, Manny Delcarmen kept Okajima out of the game until the eighth, and Papelbon pitched a beautiful four-out save, preserving Masterson's one run game and further proving the prowess of the young'uns last night.

The amount of young players on this team is outstanding. Nine out of the 25 men on the Red Sox active roster were born after 1980, and only four of eleven pitchers for the Red Sox were born before then (Javier Lopez, Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin and Tim Wakefield).

In addition to losing their "all-veteran" team reputation from 2003 - 2004, the Red Sox are able to save a lot of money by putting the farm system to use. The combined salaries of the five pitchers last night (Masterson, Lopez, Delcarmen, Okajima, and Papelbon) was approximately $3,686,000 (according to mlbcontracts.blogspot.com). Multiply that number by seven and you have Alex Rodriguez's salary alone.

Not only are these players cheap, but they're good as well. I'd much rather haveJus Justing Masterson on the mound than Mike Mussina. Mussina didn't make it through the first inninng while Masterson made it through 6 1/3. Youkilis is arguably the best first baseman in baseball right now both in the field and at the plate. . Jonathan Papelbon has mad his dominance at the end of games quite clear, and Jacoby is one of the hardest players to catch stealing in the major leagues.

Looks like if the Yankees want to start winning, they should go young.
How unbelievable! How amazing! How deserving!

Jon Lester just pitched both the first no-hitter and the first complete game of his career 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer, 6 months after pitching the winning game of the World Series. Incredible.

I watched the game from the seventh inning on because I was visiting my mom in the hospital earlier, and at that point in the game he looked fresh, composed, calm - all while knowing he was pitching a no-hitter. It was unbelievable.

This was the eleventh no-hitter at Fenway Park, the ninth by a Red Sox pitcher, the fifth by a lefty, the first by a cancer survivor.

This was the fourth no-hitter that Jason Varitek caught with four
different pitchers (Nomo '01, Lowe '02, Bucholz '07, Lester '08).

This was the second no-hitter against the Royals. The other belongs to Nolan Ryan.

This was the best no-hitter story.

This was the most deserving pitcher.

Imagine lying in a hospital bed, facing your own mortality, letting poison drip into your body and hoping it will only kill the malignant cells, then imagine waiting around all winter hearing your name thrown around in trade talks after pitching the winning game of a World Series, and then imagine standing on the mound months later at Fenway Park throwing a no-hitter with 130 pitches, 86 of them strikes, and only requiring one pretty decent catch to preserve it.

When asked how it felt after his tough year last year, the first thing Lester responded with was, "Well, I thought I threw the ball pretty well last year," not even thinking that the reporter would be talking about coming back from cancer.

As Tito put it, "To watch him do that tonight was beyond words."

I have a picture of Jon Lester next to my mirror, so that I remember every morning when I get ready for school that you never know when something bad will happen to you. The picture of Jon Lester is from his press conference after being diagnosed with cancer. He's looking off to the distance, his mouth hard and set, his eyes firm and strong, ready to fight. He reminds me every morning to fight and to live and to enjoy the moments when I can do what I want without the fear of the end of my life looming above me or a prolonged hospital stay scheduled for the next week or people trying to comfort you with no idea what you're going through. It's going to be even more special to look at that picture now and remember that a person can come back no matter how hard it seems.

Jon Lester. No-hitter against the Kansas City Royals. May 19th, 2008.

Another Red Sox Classic.
So the Sox swept the Brewers. Whoopdeedoo. Although any sweep is certainly welcome, I dI'm not overly impressed with beating a 20-24 team that is in last place in their division. Seriously, beating the Brewers is like beating the Yankees (who also suck - had to take that jab).

I guess it was nice that Papi hit two home runs yesterday. It may finally be safe to say that the slump is officially over. He;s up to .250 now with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs. Pedroia and Youk also went yard yesterday, contributing to half of the eight home runs hit yesterday. Great day for pitching.

Manny didn't hit any home runs this weekend, so he's still at 498. If Manny even knows that he is at the precipice of a huge milestone for Hall of FAme consideration, I'd be impressed. I think it is kind of stupid to watch him every single day expecting him to reach 500. What hitter hits a home run every day? To say he's sitting on 498 or stuck at a number is a little ridiculous when Dustin Pedroia hit his first home run in a month. Obviously, Dustin isn't the same type of hitter as Manny, but it's just an example. Manny is most likely not going to hit 499 today and 500 tomorrow, but I can be money that he'll have 500 home runs before July. He's not stuck anywhere, he's just hitting like any other player. He's normal right now, or as normal as Manny Ramirez can possibly be.

The Royals are coming to town tonight, and Tito is in Pennsylvania for his son who is graduating from UPenn. Weather permitting, he'll be back in time for the game.

If you notice some weird things happening with my typing, I'm having trouble being with the typing cursor. It's showing up behind the text, and all my text is overlapping, so I'm typing by feel right now. Sorry if this post is unreadable.
Oh Wakefield. Oh Bucholz. Oh Minnesota.

This weekend was not a good series for the Sox. After going 3-1 in Detroit, the Sox tanked against a first place team that is solid all around. The boys are now 4-4 on their road trip, the bullpen is overworked, and Beckett better pitch well tonight or else John Farrell might get arthritis in his knees from walking to and from the mound so much.

One quarter of the way through the season and the Sox are up by 1/2 game in the AL East over the Tampa Bay Rays of Sunshine. The Yankees really do suck at 19-20, and Toronto, who most had thought would lead the division for a time, find themselves in the cellar at 18-22.

Though the Sox have shown a lot of depth over the past 41 games, the pitching is definitely the weakest area and this weekend has shown that. The bullpen has merely two reliable relievers; Okajima and Papelbon. Theo finally seems to be trying to remedy that, as Bryan Corey, Kyle Snyder and Julian Tavarez are out and Craig Hansen is up in the big leagues. The Sox are expendable in the outfield and infield, with an extra outfielder in Jacoby Ellsbury and a back up in the minors in Brandon Moss. The infield could do without either Julio Lugo or Alex Cora, and Jed Lowrie has proved that he is a solid player waiting in the minors. It's hard to see Theo not trying to move an infielder or outfielder to get some pitching, as the prospects are too good to let go (Justin Masterson anyone?), and the hands in the bullpen aren't good enough to produce a decent return.

None of the pitching moves are a surprise for anyone aware and alive in Red Sox nation, but the desire is growing steadily as Wakefield starts to look his almost-42 years and Bucholz is pitching like a rookie. Schilling has started to throw, but it is unrealistic to expect him to come in and be lights out. Daisuke and Beckett are going strong right now and Lester is slightly better than mediocre, which isn't bad for the top three pitchers on a staff, but the Sox could certainly use some help at the bottom end of the five.

The pitching situation isn't exactly dire here. Obviously, the Sox are still in first place and the hitting has started up again, so winning games via pitching isn't necessary every night, but it would certainly be nice for everything on the mound to be a little more stable.

Yeah, that was all over one week.

Youk is simply amazing. It's no wonder he's a fan favorite in Boston - he completely fits the mold. After hitting two homeruns in one night in Detroit, Youk almost got thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes on a strikeout. He was so worked up about the call that he was grumbling at first base for the rest of the inning about it, and Dustin and Varitek had to get him to shut up so that he wouldn't get thrown out of the game.

That display of passion right there is Boston. It's what fans here want, and it's what fans here get frustrated with when a player lacks that visible passion. It's why J.D. Drew and sometimes Manny Ramirez cause people so much grief, not because they aren't good players but because they don't always have that gritty, down-and-dirty attitude.

Youk has set a record for most chances at first without an error, he plays almost every day, he has to be seriously injured to be forced to sit out a game, he's wicked ugly but he hits beautifully, he's the culmination of a Boston ballplayer.

After hearing that he won the AL player of the week, Youk shrugged it off in typical Youk fashion, saying, "I had a hot streak this week in power numbers, but to me, it's just a
matter of going out and trying to do the same thing over and over. In this game, even if you've had a
good week, you've got to work for today. I throw it all aside and try to play the game for today. I'm just playing. I'm just trying to get hits. It's not like I'm
trying to hit home runs. I'm trying to put a good swing on the ball."

And that's all that fans here really ask for. Just put a good swing on the ball.

Quotes from redsox.com

Last night at the Red Sox game, my friend Ari and me were making fun of Nancy Drew when he dropped a fly ball, leading to an unearned run. We were chanting "We want Moss!", which apparently offended the guy in front of us who turned around and said, "You don't put a rookie in right field. Don't you watch baseball?" I found that comment rather funny, because both Moss and Jacoby have played a lot of right field this season and I tend to prefer having a rookie who is a good player in over a veteran who sucks. And yes, sir, I do watch baseball.

Turns out our argument was all for naught, as Brandon Moss had an emergency appendectomy last night.

I can really feel for people undergoing stomach surgery, as I've had quite a few operations (fundoplication, pyloraplaste, exploratory laparoscopy) in my life as well as many surgical procedures. In fact, I'm going in for a small procedure next week.

Stomach surgery can be rough to recover from because you have trouble using your abdominal muscles afterwards. Any time you cough, sneeze, sit up, laugh, eat, drink, walk etc., it hurts. A lot. Considering all of this, Moss probably won't be playing for quite a few weeks.

Apparently, all of this started Friday night, and even though he didn't feel well, he played fantastic, going 2-4 and throwing a laser home for an outfield assist. Moss is a true Red Sox, the gritty type player that plays through whatever is bothering him, isn't afraid to get dirty and tries his hardest 162 games a year. Red Sox fans really favor these types of players, which is why Drew isn't so popular here. J.D. may be a decent baseball player, but he doesn't grit it out, and if he isn't feeling well he doesn't play through it. That is simply not acceptable for Red Sox fans.

Last night turned out to be a great game though it was absolutely freezing. I'm now 3-0 at Fenway this season, and have seen three different pitchers, which is unusual for me because typically I see the same guy every time. I have some pictures coming later of me holding the World Series ring (!) and game photos. Later,
-A
